Connectivity Improvements, Direct IP Support, and Save Backup System Update

Connectivity Improvements, Direct IP Support, and Save Backup System Update

Greetings, Captains,

Over the past few days, we have been working tirelessly to address the technical hurdles some of you have encountered. Our team has been operating in emergency mode to deploy these fixes, ensuring a smoother and more stable experience for everyone.

Patch Version: 0.10.0.3.104-256f9653

Enhanced Connectivity and Server Selection

We discovered that certain Internet Service Providers (ISPs) were inadvertently blocking portions of our networking infrastructure. To resolve this, we have introduced the following updates:

  • Manual Server Selection: You are no longer restricted to automatic matchmaking. You can now manually select a specific connectivity server from a list of reachable options. These preferences can also be managed via ServerDescription.json.
  • Known Limitation: Please note that if your connection is unstable—due to high latency or packet loss—a server may be incorrectly flagged as “available” even if it remains inaccessible.

If you previously struggled to connect with friends, we recommend coordinating on a shared server. Please be patient with hosting providers as they update their configurations to support these changes over the weekend.

Direct IP Connection Support

To assist users experiencing issues within local networks or with specific self-hosted configurations, we have added a Direct IP connection method:

  • Direct IP Functionality: When hosting a game or a dedicated server, you can now bypass our standard connectivity services entirely. Players will connect directly via your IP address. Note that invite codes will not function in this mode. Settings can be adjusted in ServerDescription.json.
  • Known Limitation: Currently, if a connection fails due to an incorrect password or a version mismatch, the game will return to the main menu without a specific error notification.

This is intended as an advanced workaround for users whose ISPs block our primary services. Note: This may require technical knowledge, such as configuring port forwarding or NAT settings on your router.

Save File Safeguards

We are investigating rare reports of save file corruption, which appear to occur most often when synchronizing across multiple devices via Steam Cloud. While we work on a permanent solution, we have implemented an automated backup system.

How the Backup System Functions

  • Backups are generated automatically every time you launch the game or start a dedicated server.
  • The system retains the 30 most recent files, automatically overwriting the oldest once the limit is reached.
  • Storage Location: C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\R5\Saved\SaveProfiles\{steamid}_Backups

Restoring Your Progress

  1. Navigate to your backup directory: C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\R5\Saved\SaveProfiles\%your_Steam_ID%_Backups
  2. Select the backup folder corresponding to your desired date and time.
  3. Copy the contents (the folder and AccountDescription.json).
  4. Paste these files into your active save directory: C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\R5\Saved\SaveProfiles\{your_Steam_ID}\RocksDB (overwrite when prompted).

For dedicated servers, the process is identical, but the files are located within your server installation folder under \R5\Saved\SaveProfiles\Default_Backups.

Additional Improvements & Bug Fixes

  • Resolved a startup issue affecting Windows users with non-Unicode characters in their usernames.
  • Server processes now automatically default to “Above Normal” priority for improved performance.
  • Enabled support for HDR display settings.
  • Increased the rendering distance for grass assets.
  • Fixed a visual bug affecting Plague Witch feather animations.
  • Addressed various clipping issues with armor sets and refined trader models, outfits, and poses.
  • Patched a rare crash triggered by specific item-related errors.
