City Corner #3: Free Anniversary Update

Cities Skylines Anniversary Banner

Greetings, Mayors!

The Cities: Skylines franchise officially reaches its 11-year milestone this month. To commemorate this landmark occasion, we are rolling out a special Anniversary Patch. While this update may be modest in scale, it introduces a significant new asset and several highly requested gameplay enhancements. Beyond the immediate changes, we also want to provide a glimpse into our current projects and what the community can anticipate in the coming months.

Let’s dive into the details.

Introducing the Iceflake Arena

Iceflake Arena Asset

What architectural centerpiece is grand, oval-shaped, and boasts the most pristine ice in the region? The Iceflake Arena has arrived! This Anniversary Patch introduces a new Signature Commercial building that serves as a premier entertainment hub for your citizens, hosting everything from high-energy concerts to professional ice hockey matches. Once placed, the arena provides a city-wide boost to attractiveness and enhances the well-being of residents within a 2-kilometer radius. And in a nod to our Finnish roots, no world-class facility would be complete without a luxurious sauna.

Granular Zoning Control

Zoning Toggle Feature

Have you ever wished for more aesthetic control over your streets, such as roads with zoning on only one side or no zoning at all? We certainly have. Inspired by the ingenuity of the “Zone Tools” and “Easy Zoning” mods created by River-mochi, we have integrated a native zoning toggle. This tool allows you to deactivate zoning on any road segment according to your urban design preferences—whether on the left, right, or both sides.

Zoning Tool UI

We view this as the first iteration of the tool and plan to refine its functionality further, so please share your feedback on how it impacts your city planning.

A Comprehensive In-Game Encyclopedia

As previously teased in City Corner #1, we have been developing a centralized knowledge base. Formerly referred to as the Glossary, the new in-game Encyclopedia is now live with the Anniversary Patch.

In-game Encyclopedia

This resource offers deep dives into various gameplay mechanics, categorized by core systems and DLC features. While it builds upon the information found in standard tutorials, the Encyclopedia provides a more accessible and permanent reference point. If you need clarity on a specific mechanic, the integrated search function will help you find the answers instantly.

Critical Bug Fixes and Optimizations

While we continue to pursue long-term resolutions for complex community-reported issues, this patch includes several vital interim fixes. One such area is office demand; we discovered that local consumption constraints were disproportionately stifling growth. Since offices provide services that can be traded globally, we have adjusted these limitations. Players should notice a more consistent and realistic demand for office space moving forward.

We are also addressing the issue of “stuck” citizens, particularly those attempting to exit the city. Our investigation revealed bottlenecks in pathfinding requests related to outside connections. By shortening the reset interval for these requests, citizens—and even criminals at crime scenes—will be far less likely to become permanently immobilized.

Furthermore, we identified a logic error affecting mixed residential developments. Previously, commercial units within these buildings were occasionally miscounted as residential units, leading the system to believe housing was available when it was actually occupied by businesses. This caused prospective residents to get stuck in a loop searching for homes. We have updated the logic to ensure the system accurately distinguishes between living spaces and commercial storefronts.

Looking Ahead

The evolution of Cities: Skylines is ongoing. While the Anniversary Patch introduces immediate improvements, our roadmap for the second quarter is packed with further refinements based on forum feedback. Many of these fixes are currently in the testing phase, and while we aren’t ready to commit to specific release dates just yet, we will maintain transparent communication throughout the process.

Thank you for being part of this incredible journey. Happy anniversary!
