Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes Addresses Backlash Over Onstage Comments

Chris Robinson is finally setting the record straight following the intense backlash he faced after a May 31 performance in Tampa. During The Black Crowes’ stop at the MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, tensions flared on stage, leading to a heated exchange with the audience.

The conflict ignited shortly after the band played “Soul Singing.” As the band’s mascot—clad in Uncle Sam attire—appeared on the venue’s backdrop, a segment of the crowd began a spirited “U-S-A!” chant. Robinson, clearly frustrated, retorted from the stage: “Thanks for the geography lesson. I don’t know what you’re so proud of right now.” He went on to tell his detractors that he was neither intimidated nor ignorant, prompting some concertgoers to walk out in protest.

In a recent interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, Robinson argued that the incident was intentionally distorted to generate outrage and drive engagement. “I think the whole thing was, of course, blown out of context so people can get clicks and stir up animosity,” he remarked, suggesting that social media thrives on creating synthetic controversies.

Addressing potential concerns regarding his patriotism, the frontman was quick to clarify his stance on the military. “No matter what I ever would say or do or feel about things, there’s no way I would disrespect our veterans,” he stated. “For the people who’ve put their lives on the line and made that sacrifice… I wouldn’t do that. But I have to speak my mind. I don’t have an agenda; I’m just trying to make a soulful connection with people.”

The friction arrived during a particularly sensitive window following Memorial Day. While Robinson has previously distanced himself from the political arena—preferring to focus on art, poetry, and personal experience—he remains vocal about his personal values. Earlier this year, he told Mojo that while he isn’t interested in making overt political statements, he refuses to stay silent on issues he perceives as fundamentally wrong.

The Black Crowes continue their “Southern Hospitality” tour through Georgia and North Carolina, following the March release of their latest studio album, A Pound of Feathers.
