Ariana Grande is metaphorically trimming the negativity straight out of her existence. In the striking visual for “Petal”—the title track of her highly anticipated album released on Friday, July 31—the acclaimed Wicked star takes total control of her narrative, literally wielding a garden chainsaw against a panel of cynical executives who presume to police her image.

Captured entirely in VistaVision, a classic 1950s cinematic aspect ratio, the video opens with Grande portraying Pepper, an ambitious hopeful sitting among a sea of competitors inside the fictional Fame INC. headquarters. She endures a disheartening rejection from a boardroom of austere, suited men who summarily stamp her evaluation sheet as “Not good enough.”

Channeling Sandy’s iconic transformation from the conclusion of Grease, Grande returns clad in a sleek black bodysuit and striking red lipstick. Undeterred, the panel’s judgment remains harshly dismissive—critiquing her lack of conventional sex appeal and suggesting surgical enhancements. In response, she stages yet another evolution, appearing in an exaggerated cow-print ensemble with overtly artificial prosthetics, only for the executives to coldly label her “desperate.”
