Charli XCX Responds to Dave Grohl’s ‘Apple’ Dance on ‘The Graham Norton Show’

Pop innovator Charli XCX recently offered her take on Dave Grohl’s viral rendition of the “Apple” dance during a joint appearance on The Graham Norton Show. The episode also highlighted a live performance by Foo Fighters, who debuted the title track from their highly anticipated 12th studio album, Your Favorite Toy.
During the interview, host Graham Norton revisited the 2024 social media clip showing Grohl and his daughter, Harper, participating in the choreographed trend set to Charli’s Brat standout, “Apple.” In the footage, Harper leads the routine while a seated Grohl provides his own unique interpretation of the movements.
Reacting to the clip, Charli XCX praised the rock legend’s unconventional rhythm. “It’s like you’re taking an abstract approach to the choreography, and that’s actually very cool,” she told him. Grohl, in turn, confirmed that fans shouldn’t expect similar synchronized routines at their stadium shows, joking that the Foo Fighters aren’t exactly known for their dance steps.
Later in the program, the band took to the stage to perform “Your Favorite Toy,” the lead single from their forthcoming record, arriving April 24. The lineup saw a temporary shift as guitarist Jason Falkner filled in for Pat Smear. Grohl explained that Smear is currently recuperating from a broken foot sustained during a “gardening accident.” Despite his absence, Smear was honored visually with his face featured prominently on the band’s kick drum.
The performance was further elevated by guest backing vocals from Scissor Sisters members Jake Shears and Babydaddy. Reflecting on the band’s thirty-year legacy, Grohl spoke candidly about their enduring chemistry. “We’ve been a group for three decades now. We’ve grown up together and navigated all the highs and lows of life,” he remarked. “At this point, it’s about far more than just the music.”
Grohl also noted that their creative process is mirrors their current stage in life, humorously describing the band as a “pack of grumpy old men.” He dismissed the idea that age leads to a mellowing out of their sound. “You might think things would soften as you get older, but they don’t,” he said, before punctuated the sentiment with a trademark primal scream. “This is exactly where we are right now.”
Your Favorite Toy marks the first Foo Fighters project to feature Ilan Rubin as the band’s official drummer.
