The Call of Duty franchise is currently navigating the most significant crisis in its storied history. Despite lofty promises from developers, Black Ops 7 is recording performance metrics that would have seemed impossible for the brand just a few years ago.
Even a combination of aggressive marketing blitzes, free-access weekends, and price cuts of up to 50% has failed to halt the player exodus. The peak concurrent user count for the Call of Duty launcher on Steam—which integrates Warzone, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7—has plummeted to 52,632, dragging the series down to a mediocre 44th place in the platform’s overall rankings.
This downturn is especially glaring when compared to its competitors. Currently, the juggernaut is being outperformed by the likes of VRChat, Dead by Daylight, the nearly two-decade-old Team Fortress 2, and emerging titles such as Arc Raiders and Marvel Rivals.
Even the traditionally busy holiday window offered no relief, as December saw the player base shrink to 43,569 active users. This highlights a historic low in engagement—falling significantly behind Battlefield, which outpaced Call of Duty by more than 50,000 players on Steam during the festive period.
The stagnation stems from several core issues. Fans have grown increasingly disillusioned with the franchise’s current direction. While Treyarch received some accolades for its Zombies mode, the cooperative campaign and the controversial implementation of AI-generated cosmetic items were met with widespread derision. Furthermore, the reliance on flamboyant crossovers, including the Fallout collaboration, has alienated purists who are desperate for the series to return to its gritty, tactical roots.
Hope for a turnaround now rests with Infinity Ward, which is expected to attempt a massive audience retrieval in 2026. However, this task is complicated by the looming shadow of GTA 6. For Xbox, the situation is particularly dire: the company is grappling with a simultaneous decline in console hardware sales and a crisis within Call of Duty—the cornerstone asset of their massive Activision Blizzard acquisition.
