The PlayStation 5 secured its position as the top-selling console last month, outperforming the Switch 2. Here are the latest insights into the US gaming market.
In January 2026, the PlayStation 5 emerged as the leading hardware platform in the United States, successfully eclipsing the newly launched Nintendo Switch 2. These findings were recently published by the industry tracking firm Circana.
According to the report, the PS5 claimed the top spot in both unit sales and total dollar revenue, leaving the Switch 2 in second place. However, the broader market showed signs of shifting momentum: PS5 sales saw a 17% year-over-year decline compared to January 2025, while Xbox Series X/S figures dropped by 27%. The original Nintendo Switch experienced the most significant downturn, with sales plummeting by 79%.
Despite these individual declines, the arrival of the Switch 2 provided a necessary boost to the sector. Overall consumer spending on gaming hardware in the US rose by 16% last month, reaching a total of $248 million.
In the software category, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 continued its dominance as the best-selling title in the US, with NBA 2K26 maintaining its hold on the runner-up position. The most successful new debut of the month was Code Vein 2, which entered the charts at number 11—a notable achievement during the typically quiet January release window.
The following are the top 10 best-selling games in the United States for January 2026 (notably excluding digital sales for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2):
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 7
- NBA 2K26
- Madden NFL 26
- Minecraft
- Battlefield 6
- EA Sports FC 26
- Grand Theft Auto 5
