We are only a few days away from the highly anticipated debut of Marathon, Bungie’s bold new entry into the extraction shooter genre. Ahead of its arrival, the studio has provided a comprehensive look at the roadmap for Season 1, while offering a cryptic glimpse into the future with Season 2. Perhaps most notably, Bungie confirmed a player-friendly approach to monetization: all seasonal updates—including new gear, Runner shells, maps, and events—will be entirely free for all players to earn through gameplay.
According to a recent developer blog, seasons in Marathon are designed to last approximately three months. Each cycle will introduce fresh mechanics and content designed to shift the meta, challenge survival skills, and offer new avenues for power progression. Bungie describes Tau Ceti as a “living universe” that will evolve based on player feedback and the collective impact of the community as they unravel the mysteries of the lost colony and the derelict Marathon ship.
“Seasonal updates will introduce new gameplay, including gear, Runner shells, zones, events, and more, which will be free for all players to access or earn – no expansions or DLC required.”
This commitment to a free seasonal model is a significant move in the competitive live-service landscape, drawing on the years of experience Bungie gained refining the ecosystem of Destiny 2.
Marathon Season 1: A Fresh Start for Every Runner

To maintain a level playing field, every player will begin the season at the same starting point. Throughout Season 1, Runners will tackle contracts and advance faction reputations to secure superior base statistics and high-tier equipment from the Armory. Bungie notes that this progression system is designed to make the sting of death more manageable, allowing players to recover lost gear and iterate on their character builds more efficiently.
Competitive players can look forward to a Ranked ladder and high-stakes “Cryo Archive” runs, where the most prestigious rewards await those brave enough to risk it all. However, players should prepare for the seasonal reset. When a season concludes, gear, contract progress, faction standing, and player levels will be wiped. On the bright side, permanent unlocks—such as cosmetics, titles, milestone rewards, and Liaison contract progress—will carry over, ensuring that long-term achievements remain intact.
The Debut Season: “Death Is The First Step”

The inaugural season, titled Death Is The First Step, plunges players into a proxy war between rival factions vying for control over the remnants of the New Cascadia Colony. As the community progresses, they will eventually unlock access to the Cryo Archive, an endgame zone located within the derelict UESC Marathon ship orbiting Tau Ceti IV. This area promises complex security puzzles, frozen vaults, and a mysterious, formidable entity that haunts the ship’s corridors.
In late March, the Ranked Mode will officially open, providing a dedicated space for players to test their skills and earn season-exclusive honors. In addition to these headline features, Season 1 will include several quality-of-life updates, balance adjustments, and new tactical implants.
At launch, players can expect:
- Faction Progression: Access to all six launch factions, including the enigmatic Sekiguchi Genetics.
- Runner Shells: Six distinct shells to master, including the agile “Thief.”
- Explorable Zones: Three massive environments, including “Outpost,” which unlocks shortly after launch.
- Arsenal: 28 unique weapons, accompanied by a deep system of mods, cores, and implants.
- Lore: A robust Codex system for tracking achievements and uncovering the game’s narrative.
Season 2: The Shadows of Nightfall

Looking further ahead, Season 2: Nightfall will showcase how player actions actively reshape Tau Ceti IV. Bungie intends for each season to possess a distinct thematic identity, mixing new content with narrative shifts that keep the gameplay loop feeling revitalized.
One of the highlights of Nightfall will be a nocturnal variation of the “Dire Marsh” zone. Players will have to navigate this swampy terrain in near-total darkness while dealing with UESC reinforcements and a redacted, mysterious threat that the developers are currently keeping under wraps. Season 2 will also introduce the Cradle, a new system designed to give players even greater agency over their Runner’s statistical build, allowing for more specialized playstyles.
As the game grows, Bungie promises that Marathon will feel significantly different a year from now, as more secrets are unearthed from the ruins of Tau Ceti. The journey officially begins this Thursday, March 5, when Marathon launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
