BTS Bridging Eras: New ‘ARIRANG’ Trailer Honors Korean Heritage and Historical Legacy
BTS is paying homage to their South Korean roots with their forthcoming album, ARIRANG. The global icons recently unveiled a poignant animated teaser that illustrates how the group’s modern-day cultural impact mirrors a significant historical milestone from over a century ago.
The video, released on Thursday (March 12), opens with a meaningful dedication: “This video was inspired by the story of seven young Koreans as documented in The Washington Post on May 8, 1896 (‘Seven Koreans at Howard’),” the text reads, noting that these individuals captured the first known audio recordings of Koreans in Washington, D.C.

Described as a modern reimagining, the visual work draws upon the profound cultural weight of these historical archives, which preserved the authentic voices of those pioneers and the inaugural recording of the traditional folk song “Arirang.” The group acknowledges that while the animation is rooted in history, it takes creative liberties to tell its story.
The narrative follows seven men journeying across the ocean to the United States, where they sing joyfully for a gathered crowd at Howard University. The timeline then shifts forward 117 years to 2013, depicting BTS on stage before thousands of fans. This transition highlights the parallel between the band’s role in elevating K-pop’s global presence and the achievements of those seven men in the late 19th century. Musically, the teaser evolves from a somber piano melody into a pulsing EDM groove, offering fans a potential preview of the new LP’s sonic direction.
As the video concludes, evocative text appears on the screen: “Every story begins with a song. When the world feels heavy, when your heart feels light, what is your love song?”
This cinematic teaser arrives just one week ahead of the album’s scheduled release on March 20. Alongside the trailer, the group revealed the official cover art for the 14-track project, featuring RM, Jin, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook dressed in sophisticated, tailored suits, projecting a stoic and professional aesthetic.
Since the title was first announced in January, BTS has been vocal about using this project to celebrate their heritage. In a prior statement, the group explained that “Arirang” is a traditional folk song long associated with themes of connection, distance, and reunion. The album is framed as a “deeply reflective body of work” that explores the band’s fundamental identity and roots.
