Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, and Public Enemy Headline Star-Studded Music America Concert

A star-studded roster of music legends—including Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Public Enemy, Sheryl Crow, and Jackson Browne—converged at Monmouth University this week for the Music America: The Songs That Shaped Us concert series. The festivities hit a high note on Friday, June 5, as Jon Bon Jovi made a triumphant return to the stage, marking his first live performance in New Jersey since 2018.

These two landmark evenings served as a celebratory prelude to the official June 13 opening of the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey.

Friday’s performance ignited with Springsteen delivering high-octane versions of Elvis Presley’s “Jailhouse Rock” and “Burning Love,” accompanied by the Disciples of Soul. The highlight for many was Bon Jovi’s guest appearance, where he lent his vocals to a rendition of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode.” This appearance is a significant milestone for the rocker, who has spent the last several years prioritizing his recovery following vocal cord surgery.

The concert’s curation offered a deep dive into the American songbook. Jackson Browne channeled the essence of the 1970s singer-songwriter movement, while 86-year-old icon Dion performed classics like “The Wanderer.” The setlist continued with Mavis Staples channeling the spirit of 1960s activism through The Band’s “The Weight,” before Public Enemy brought the house down with their definitive anthem, “Fight the Power.”

The finale featured a communal set of classics, including “Raise Your Hand” and “I Don’t Want to Go Home,” with Springsteen wrapping up the night with an intimate solo performance of his signature track, “Land of Hope and Dreams.”

The preceding Thursday show explored the roots of American music, featuring performances by Kenny Chesney, Rosanne Cash, the Dropkick Murphys, Trombone Shorty, and more.

The new, 30,000-square-foot Springsteen Center for American Music will provide fans with an immersive look at the evolution of American sound. Visitors can look forward to a 250-seat Dolby-equipped soundstage, extensive archives, and interactive exhibits detailing Springsteen’s legendary career.
