Bonnie Tyler, Singer of ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart,’ Dies at 75

Bonnie Tyler, Iconic Voice Behind “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” Passes Away at 75

Bonnie Tyler, the powerhouse vocalist immortalized by the chart-topping 1983 anthem “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” has died at the age of 75.

In a somber announcement shared via the Welsh icon’s Facebook page on Thursday morning, representatives confirmed that Tyler “unexpectedly passed away last night in a Portuguese hospital due to complications from an ongoing illness.” The singer had been battling health setbacks following emergency intestinal surgery in Faro earlier this May, which had left her in a medically induced coma.

Born Gaynor Hopkins in the mining town of Neath, Wales, Tyler first captured international attention in the late 1970s with the soulful ballad “It’s a Heartache.” However, it was her 1983 collaboration with songwriter and producer Jim Steinman that cemented her status as a global superstar. The dramatic, operatic power-ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart” dominated the Billboard Hot 100 for four consecutive weeks, earning Tyler the distinction of being the first and only Welsh artist to reach the summit of the chart.

The track, a centerpiece of her hit album Faster Than the Speed of Night, garnered multiple Grammy nominations and remains a definitive pillar of 80s pop culture. Tyler followed this massive success with “Holding Out for a Hero,” an electrifying staple of the Footloose soundtrack. Her career was defined by her unmistakably gravelly voice—a unique, raspy tone that emerged following surgery on her vocal cords early in her career.

Over a storied five-decade journey, Tyler recorded 18 studio albums. She continued to engage with fans globally, famously representing the United Kingdom at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest with the entry “Believe in Me.” Her contributions to the arts were formally recognized in 2023 when she was appointed an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

At the time of her passing, Tyler remained a dedicated performer. She was slated for a series of European appearances this summer, including the Sunshine Festival in Worcester, and had a major date scheduled at Cardiff’s Utilita Arena for December. Her final live performance took place on March 19 at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, where she continued to showcase the singular vocal strength that made her a legend.
