Reimagining Amsterdam: A Highlight of the Benelux Rework
Celebrated for its labyrinthine canal network, timeless architecture, and omnipresent cycling culture, Amsterdam stands as one of the Netherlands’ most evocative destinations. We are thrilled to offer a behind-the-scenes look at the progress of our Benelux Rework team. They are currently elevating this iconic city to contemporary DLC standards, introducing intricate detailing, modernized road systems, and refreshed urban landmarks.

Tracing its lineage back to a 12th-century fishing settlement along the Amstel River, Amsterdam evolved into a premier global trade hub during the Dutch Golden Age. Its 17th-century canal ring, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, remains a cornerstone of the city’s identity. Today, Amsterdam is a vibrant European capital that harmoniously blends historical prestige with cutting-edge infrastructure—a balance our team has strived to capture in this overhaul.

The scope of this project is immense: Amsterdam has been entirely reconstructed from the foundations. Replicating such a dense and culturally rich environment within the constraints of the game’s scale was a formidable challenge. Through strategic design choices, our developers have successfully preserved the city’s unique atmosphere and visual essence. The results speak for themselves, offering a far more immersive experience for every driver.

A particularly interesting design hurdle involved the A10 Zuid ring road located to the city’s south. In the real world, this segment is currently being transitioned into an underground tunnel as part of a massive infrastructure overhaul. However, during our initial research phase, the highway remained above ground. This presented a dilemma: should we depict the current landscape or attempt to predict a future layout? Ultimately, we chose to keep the highway above ground. This decision allows players to experience the striking sight of driving beneath towering skyscrapers, providing a unique and visually powerful perspective of the metropolitan skyline.

This comprehensive rebuild also provided the perfect opportunity to integrate new landmarks and upgrade existing ones to our latest modeling standards. While the historic inner city remains inaccessible for heavy transport, we have curated specific routes and vistas that encapsulate the spirit of Amsterdam. We owe a debt of gratitude to our dedicated asset team; their craftsmanship in recreating the city’s architecture is what truly breathes life into this virtual environment.

The Gateway of IJmuiden
Situated a short distance from the capital is the coastal town of IJmuiden, a vital maritime link between the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. This strategic ferry terminal has also received a significant facelift as part of the Benelux update.

While IJmuiden was present in the original map, it has been modernized to align with the visual fidelity of the reworked Amsterdam. Though the changes here are more focused than the total reconstruction seen in the capital, the improvements in textures and layout are immediately apparent. The terminal remains a pivotal hub for long-haul routes into the UK, and its refreshed design offers a more realistic and seamless transition for cross-channel journeys.

Interestingly, this location became a standout favorite for one of our map designers, who appreciated its distinctive industrial atmosphere and its crucial role in the transport network. We anticipate this route will become even more popular as we look toward future updates to the surrounding regions.

We look forward to providing more updates on the Benelux Rework, which will be released as a free content update for all Euro Truck Simulator 2 players. Stay tuned to our official social media channels for the latest developments. Safe travels, and we’ll see you on the road!
