Not everyone agrees that Steam is a monopoly in the PC market.

A recent article claimed, “Steam from Valve is a monopoly in the PC games market,” citing 72% of surveyed industry executives.

Circana analyst Matt Piscatella flagged the piece and commented, “In other words, 72% don’t know what a monopoly is.”

The article also drew the attention of Larian Studios’ publishing director Michael Daus — who rejected the monopoly label: “It reads as if Steam doesn’t provide a service.”

He added that Steam’s operations aren’t driven by shareholder performance metrics, since Valve is a privately held company.

One participant in the discussion voiced concerns about Steam’s future once Valve’s leader steps down. Michael replied, “A world after Gabe would be terrible.”
