Avatar: Seven Havens Creators Defend The Legend of Korra

People have been hating on Korra since her first appeared. The protagonist of The Legend of Korra, the follow-up to Avatar: The Last Airbender, faces regular criticism for various perceived issues. Seven Havens, the latest Avatar series, leans into this sentiment by casting the former avatar as a world-destroyer whose death is celebrated. Some viewers interpret this as confirmation that the Avatar creators hate the character, but Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko quickly shut down that claim.

Speaking to Teen Vogue, franchise creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko addressed Korra’s legacy.

The idea that we hate Korra? I would say watch the show.

That’s definitely not true. She’s one of my favorite characters.

The two creators also addressed the persistent claim that Korra failed as the avatar because she severed her connection to her past lives.

Her uncle did that to her. Aang’s entire people were wiped out, but no one seems to hold that against Aang.

Regarding the double standard applied to Korra, Bryan Konietzko explained that misogyny and homophobia play a major role. Hearing the creators address the issue directly is refreshing given that fandom hostility has persisted since Korra debuted in 2012.

The first three episodes of Avatar: Seven Havens treat Korra with a metatextual approach. The negative portrayal of Korra reflects how a segment of the fandom treats her. While unconfirmed, the narrative likely holds deeper motivations for why Korra seemingly plunged the world into chaos. Michael DiMartino teased that viewers do not yet know the full story, stating that more of Korra’s history will be revealed.

At New York Comic Con, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko announced that Seven Havens will receive four seasons. Fans no longer need to wonder if each season will be the last. The expanded run allows the story to explore Korra’s history further. Additionally, an upcoming series will follow Aang’s predecessor, Avatar Kurok, on a swashbuckling adventure.

Michael DiMartino is also writing a new graphic novel trilogy titled The Long Game. This book explores the history of the Red Lotus, the antagonists from the third season of The Legend of Korra. The upcoming stories may shed light on the events that led to Korra’s controversial actions.
