Avatar Legends Could Be the First Truly Great Avatar: The Last Airbender Game

During the recent Evo Awards, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game unveiled a striking new trailer, officially locking in a July 2 launch date. The footage suggests a promising future for the title, which has a significant opportunity to become the definitive interactive experience for the franchise—a feat that has eluded most Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra adaptations in the past.

The gameplay reveal confirms that Avatar Legends is a traditional 2D fighter equipped with the genre’s quintessential features. Players can expect a narrative-driven story mode, classic arcade ladders, and robust training suites to refine their techniques before diving into competitive play. To ensure a seamless online experience, the developer has integrated rollback netcode for minimized latency and full crossplay support, preventing community fragmentation across different hardware.

While five additional combatants are scheduled to join the fray via post-launch DLC, the base game will debut with a diverse roster of twelve fighters:

  1. Aang
  2. Avatar State Aang
  3. Azula
  4. Katara
  5. Kyoshi
  6. Ozai
  7. Sokka
  8. Toph
  9. Zuko
  10. Korra
  11. Avatar State Korra
  12. Zaheer

By focusing on mechanical depth and honoring the source material, Avatar Legends could finally shatter the cycle of mediocrity that has plagued the IP’s gaming history. As recently as 2023, licensed Avatar titles have often felt like budget-restricted projects that lacked the polish necessary to do justice to such a rich universe. Even the high-octane specialists at PlatinumGames struggled to capture the magic with their 2014 Korra title. This new entry aims to set a higher standard for the brand.

We are currently witnessing a resurgence of high-quality licensed titles, particularly within the fighting game subgenre. With Invincible VS arriving next month and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls slated for August, Avatar Legends enters a crowded but exciting market. Though its initial roster is more concentrated than its tag-team rivals, its dedication to the core bending mechanics may help it stand out as a premier competitive title.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is set to release on July 2 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and the successor to the Nintendo Switch.
