Avantris’ New D&D Kickstarter Fuses Star Wars, Cowboy Bebop, and Synthwave

For those who fuel their tabletop adventures with retro-futuristic synthwave rhythms, a new neon-drenched frontier is on the horizon. Neon Odyssey is the next major 5e expansion from Avantris Entertainment, the creative powerhouse behind the Legends of Avantris actual-play series. Following the monumental success of their folk-horror supplement, The Crooked Moon—which garnered over $4 million in crowdfunding—the team is shifting gears toward a high-octane ’80s space opera.

The developers pitch the project as a stylistic collision where “Star Wars meets Cowboy Bebop,” all wrapped in a vibrant synthwave aesthetic. The scale of this universe is vast, spanning three hardcover volumes and totaling over 1,400 pages of material. The Outrunner’s Handbook functions as the primary rulebook for characters and space combat; the Cosmic Codex unveils the Stardust Rhapsody setting alongside a hoard of magic items and monsters; and the Overdrive Expansion provides advanced mechanics and deeper world-building for players looking to push the system to its limits.

Bridging the gap between traditional fantasy and space opera is no small feat. Instead of simply transplanting wizards into cockpits, Neon Odyssey offers a comprehensive mechanical reimagining. Every core 5e class receives a thematic sci-fi overhaul, joined by an entirely new class: the Machinist, a technomantic inventor of intricate mechanical marvels. The sheer volume of content is staggering, featuring more than 40 subclasses, 30 playable species, and a library of 300 alien creatures and starships.

While the setting embraces the colorful whimsy of ’80s sci-fi—highlighted by imagery like space-clowns and celestial mounts—it isn’t all neon lights and laughter. The project’s cinematic trailer suggests that cosmic horrors are waiting in the dark corners of the galaxy, providing a balanced tone that rewards longtime fans of the Avantris brand with deep lore and familiar references.

The Kickstarter campaign for Neon Odyssey is scheduled to go live this May. To build momentum, Avantris will host a weekly programming slate dedicated to the project from March through June 2026.
