Avalanche Studios Co-Founder Says Just Cause 5 Won’t Be Released

Avalanche Studios co‑founder Christopher Sundberg has put an end to hopes for Just Cause 5. He says the project will not move forward, despite earlier rumours — reportedly in 2205 — that a new entry had been in development before being shelved.

In a series of posts on X, Sundberg spoke about the fate of the cancelled Contraband project and explained that Just Cause 5 won’t materialise because most members of the original team are no longer with the studio.

“We and the team pitched Contraband to Microsoft back in 2017, and the deal was signed. Much has changed since then, but it would be great to see it released someday. #JC5 won’t happen because almost none of the old crew remain.”

When one user suggested that Just Cause 5 could have “saved the studio,” Sundberg replied:

“I doubt it. They need to rekindle the spark, take risks, annoy people and attempt what others think impossible. I founded Avalanche to break molds, not to conform to them.”

According to a former Sumo Digital employee’s profile, the studio worked on Just Cause 5 from July 2021 to July 2023. Avalanche previously managed the franchise, but the rights belong to Square Enix, which may have assigned development to another team.

Sundberg now leads Liquid Swords, a studio he founded in 2020.
