Koji Suzuki, the acclaimed Japanese author behind the bestselling horror novel “Ring”—which inspired a globally recognized media franchise—has died. He was 68. Suzuki passed away at a Tokyo hospital on May 8.

Following the monumental success of “Ring,” Suzuki notably stepped away from the horror genre. He shifted his focus toward general fiction, moving away from supernatural elements and spectral themes. His final novel was published as recently as 2025.

The “Ring” narrative centers on a cursed videotape featuring a vengeful ghost and a mysterious ancient well. The horror series comprises three primary novels, two short story collections, and two additional novellas set within the same universe.

Suzuki’s literary work has served as the foundation for an extensive array of adaptations, including eight Japanese films, two television series, a Hollywood trilogy, as well as various video games and comic books.
