Four years ago, in January 2021, during the third lockdown in the UK due to the pandemic, two unemployed actors, family man Sam and single Mark, delved deeper into the world of GTA Online. One day, while in the Vinewood Bowl amphitheater, they came up with the idea to stage the timeless theatrical classic — William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” Of course, this would be in an open session, in front of an audience consisting of griefers, rowdy players, and other typical “Online” characters. All of this was filmed and later edited into an unusual feature film nearly an hour and a half long (89 minutes) titled Grand Theft Hamlet.
Last year, the film, written and directed by Pinny Grylls (Pinny Grylls) and Sam Crane, who also played a leading role, was released and gained success. The world premiere took place in March at the SXSW film festival. Subsequently, the film was shown at other similar events in London, Vancouver, and so on, where the creators even won awards for their creation. And critics wrote favorable reviews. All of this can be explored on the official website of the creators and on MUBI.com.
In the British Isles, Grand Theft Hamlet began showing in theaters on December 6, and in the USA, the release starts this upcoming Friday — January 17. There are also plans to add the film to streaming platforms, but there are no concrete details about this yet. The anticipation for its general availability seems worthwhile — on IMDb, the film is rated 7.4 out of 10 based on 245 reviews.
