ARC Raiders Lead Defends AI: “It Helps Developers and Benefits Players”
While ARC Raiders maintains its momentum on Steam, even outperforming Battlefield 6, it has simultaneously ignited a debate over the ethical implications of AI, particularly regarding its use in generating character voices.
Patrick Söderlund, the head of Embark Studios, offered clarification on the matter:
I urge players and critics alike to take a step back and look at the broader picture. AI isn’t a substitute for people — we have 350 dedicated staff members working alongside professional voice actors.
According to Söderlund, the technology is designed to eliminate “monotonous, routine tasks” and accelerate production workflows. This approach allowed The Finals to receive weekly updates, and ARC Raiders is following a similarly dynamic development path. Utilizing speech synthesis enables the team to iterate on dialogue instantly without the logistical delay of scheduling studio sessions.
We continue to pay actors for their voice work, but AI gives us the agility to update the game at a significantly faster pace.
As a result, the game’s environment can react to shifts in near real-time, a level of responsiveness that would be practically impossible using traditional development cycles.
I think it is necessary to step back, evaluate the situation objectively, and recognize the massive assistance this provides to developers, which ultimately translates into a better experience for the players.
Söderlund concluded:
I cannot envision a future where video games are built entirely through autonomous artificial intelligence.
