While the television series takes a grounded approach, the comic book source material presents a far more intricate and tragic backstory. Despite being a cornerstone of the Avengers and sharing a literal soul with The Vision, Simon Williams has often remained on the periphery of the MCU’s mainstream spotlight. From his legendary camaraderie with Beast to his tangential ties to the X-Men, there is a wealth of history to explore regarding this ionic powerhouse.

The Comic Book Roots of Simon Williams

Wonder Man debuted in 1964’s The Avengers #9, envisioned by the legendary trio of Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Don Heck. Originally, Simon was the heir to a munitions empire that fell into ruin due to competition with Stark Industries. Desperate to save his legacy, he resorted to embezzlement but was caught and incarcerated. His path to villainy opened when The Enchantress and Baron Heinrich Zemo offered him a chance at retribution. Motivated by a shared animosity toward Tony Stark, Williams underwent a radical experiment to become a weapon against Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Infused with volatile ionic energy, Simon gained immense physical prowess. However, Zemo’s “gift” came with a leash: Simon would perish within a week without a proprietary antidote. Tasked with infiltrating the Avengers to facilitate their downfall, Simon ultimately experienced a change of heart. Choosing heroism over survival, he betrayed Zemo and succumbed to his condition—or so it seemed. This “death” sparked a lifelong vendetta for his brother, Eric (played by Demetrius Grosse in the show), who adopted the mantle of the Grim Reaper. Unbeknownst to the world, Simon’s brain patterns were preserved by Hank Pym, serving as the blueprint for the synthetic mind of The Vision.

Simon’s story didn’t end there. Kang the Conqueror later plucked him from the timestream to join the Legion of the Unliving. Over the following years, he was revived multiple times—first by the Grim Reaper as the undead Black Talon, and later by the Living Laser. Eventually regaining his autonomy, Simon reconciled with his past and became a stalwart member of the Avengers, eventually relocating to California to help found the West Coast branch while pursuing his dream of acting.

The Scope of His Ionic Abilities

The ionic treatment transformed Simon into a powerhouse with capabilities that rival the heavy hitters of the Marvel universe. Often cited as being in Thor’s strength class, he has stood his ground against the likes of Hercules, Abomination, and Red Hulk. Beyond physical strength, Simon has mastered the manipulation of his ionic form. He can project devastating energy blasts, alter his physical dimensions, and even teleport. The MCU has dropped breadcrumbs regarding Simon’s origins that differ from the comics. His childhood history of hidden powers and interest from Agent Cleary—the same official who tracked Ms. Marvel—has led to speculation that he might be a mutant in this universe. In print, however, he remains a product of science, not genetics. Following a philosophical shift toward pacifism during the Civil War crisis, he became closely aligned with the X-Men, even sharing a body with Rogue for a time.

His most enduring relationship remains his brotherhood with Hank McCoy, the Beast. Their contrasting personalities—Simon’s introspection versus Beast’s exuberant genius—formed one of Marvel’s most beloved friendships. While his recent appearances have been sporadic, Simon is poised for a major comeback. A new limited comic series is scheduled for release on March 18, ensuring that Wonder Man remains a vital part of the Marvel landscape both on and off the screen.
