A Rooster Crashed an ARC Raiders Developers’ Meeting — They Liked Him So Much He Ended Up in the Game
We didn’t have to seek inspiration — it came to us.
ARC Raiders includes Plushkin (Scrappy) — a rooster that scavenges resources for players to use in crafting. Recently, the developers opened up about how this charismatic assistant came to be.
It turned out the rooster was real. Johan, a 3D artist on ARC Raiders, recalled an incident that happened during a video conference:
At the time I was living with my parents — and, as it turned out, they kept chickens. In the middle of the meeting the birds somehow wandered into the house and began strutting behind me, immediately stealing everyone’s attention and throwing the discussion off track. One of them was Hakan — a rooster who would later become Plushkin.
Johan decided to scan Hakan and add him to ARC Raiders as an Easter egg. Over time, though, his role grew more important.
When developing the asset for the “resource producer,” the team explored many concepts — robots, cats, and even cat-robots — but nothing felt right. Then someone remembered Hakan and asked, “Don’t we already have a rooster?”
In the end, the rooster was included in ARC Raiders as a little helper that “produces” resources.
