Jessica Jones has officially returned to the fold.
In the latest episode of Daredevil: Born Again, titled “Requiem,” the narrative opens in an idyllic suburban setting. As a young girl plays nearby, her mother—initially kept out of frame—is suddenly ambushed by Mayor Fisk’s militarized Anti-Vigilante Task Force (AVTF). The intruders are swiftly dismantled by the woman, who reveals herself to be none other than Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter). When a grenade is tossed into the fray, Jessica calmly retrieves it from her daughter before tossing it aside, a stark reminder that she hasn’t lost her edge.
This appearance marks Krysten Ritter’s first outing as the private investigator since 2019, and the intervening years have clearly brought significant life changes.
Image: Marvel StudiosWhen audiences last checked in with Jones during the finale of her own series, she had just dealt with the fallout of Trish Walker’s descent into villainy. While she briefly considered fleeing to Mexico, she ultimately chose to remain in New York, though her role at Alias Investigations remained ambiguous after handing over the reins to Malcolm.
The status of her life during the “Blip” remains unaddressed, but what is certain is that she is now a mother. Her daughter, Danielle Cage, mirrors her comic book counterpart—the child of Jessica and Luke Cage who eventually assumes the mantle of Captain America. While this version of Danielle is still a child, she clearly carries the legacy of her super-powered parents.
Luke Cage is absent from this episode, but Jessica notes he is currently entangled with some dangerous associates, suggesting his days managing Harlem’s Paradise are long behind him. While his return is anticipated for the third season, his involvement in the current narrative remains to be seen.
Jessica’s move to the suburbs was clearly a protective measure for her daughter, especially given the instability of her own powers, which she admits have been inconsistent. Despite this, she remains clued into the city’s underbelly and Matt Murdock’s ongoing resistance against Kingpin. With Wilson Fisk escalating his vendetta following his wife’s death, no vigilante is safe—not even those attempting to stay off the grid.
The reunion between Daredevil and Jessica Jones is a long-awaited highlight, as they team up to neutralize a cache of military-grade weaponry. While it was a fleeting moment of cooperation, it was a thrill to see the duo back in action. Though Jessica claims a desire to avoid the brewing conflict, history tells us that she rarely stays out of the fight for long.
