2025’s Most Unhinged Stephen King Adaptation Is Now Streaming

The year 2025 proved to be a landmark era for grim, televised bloodsports inspired by the literary mind of Stephen King. Two distinct adaptations of the author’s work reached theaters last year, each offering a haunting look at how a totalitarian state utilizes “bread and circuses” tactics—and raw financial desperation—to subjugate the population. In a striking bit of scheduling synchronicity, both films have made their streaming debuts within the same week this January.

The Long Walk, a harrowing chronicle of a lethal trek across a fractured America, recently premiered on Starz. Now joining it on the digital stage, Edgar Wright’s reimagining of The Running Man has officially landed on Paramount Plus.

King originally penned the story in 1982 under his Richard Bachman pseudonym, and while many remember the neon-soaked Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle from the late eighties, director Edgar Wright (the visionary behind Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz) brings a more modern, visceral energy to the source material. Though it trades some of Wright’s signature rhythmic editing for a grittier tone, The Running Man remains a high-octane thriller that tackles contemporary anxieties surrounding political corruption and artificial intelligence.

Glen Powell steps into the boots of Ben Richards, a desperate father pushed to the edge after being blacklisted for protesting inhumane labor conditions. With his family’s survival at stake, he volunteers for the ultimate reality show: a thirty-day manhunt where the prize is a staggering billion-dollar payout—provided he can evade death at the hands of elite hunters. Even a fatal outcome guarantees a financial windfall for his family, making it a gamble he cannot afford to refuse.

Richards soon discovers that the game is rigged by a monolithic media conglomerate that serves as the state’s enforcement arm. To protect the status quo, the Network deploys sophisticated surveillance, lethal drones, and AI-generated misinformation to manipulate public perception. The film eventually descends into a chaotic, adrenaline-fueled finale that prioritizes anti-authoritarian sentiment over strict logic, delivering a satisfying blow against the machine.

Brutal, energetic, and unapologetically bold, The Running Man is a compelling addition to the dystopian genre. While it may not reach the same heights as the masterful The Long Walk, it is a must-watch for fans of high-stakes sci-fi, especially now that it’s accessible through a standard subscription.
