Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake Team Confirms Fast Travel Was Added and Later Removed
Nintendo’s remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time arrives on November 5, 2026. Ahead of its release, Nintendo published the first two parts of an interview with the development team, revealing why one proposed convenience feature didn’t make the cut.
Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma initially asked the team to add fast-travel points that would make it easier to cross Hyrule. After trying them out, however, he realized the shortcuts changed the experience in ways he hadn’t expected.
Aonuma compared the remake with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, where numerous warp points help players navigate a vast world. By contrast, players of the original Ocarina of Time often relied on repeated forward rolls to move across Hyrule Field more quickly.
Why discovery matters in The Legend of Zelda

In the interview, Aonuma and series producer Hidemaro Fujibayashi discuss the role discovery plays in Zelda games. A distant landmark may give players a destination, but the unexpected sights and detours along the way can make the journey memorable.
That sense of exploration persuaded Aonuma to reconsider the extra warp points. During testing, he found that the shortcuts allowed players to bypass small discoveries they might otherwise have made while traveling. The team ultimately removed the new points, despite Aonuma having suggested them in the first place.
Getting around should still be more convenient than it was in the Nintendo 64 original. The remake includes a dedicated sprint button, giving Link a faster way to travel without constant rolling. Players can also find his horse, Epona, at Lon Lon Ranch.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launches for Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026.
