Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake Developer Quits Project Following Nintendo Intervention

Comment Views: 6

After a decade of dedicated work, an ambitious fan-made remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has reached its conclusion. This decision follows Nintendo’s official announcement that a reimagined version of the iconic N64 classic is slated for release on the Switch 2 later this year.

Developer CryZENx confirmed the project's cancellation in a recent Patreon update. Having utilized Unreal Engine to bring the beloved title into the modern era since 2016, the developer noted that the time had come to step aside. Prior to this, the project had maintained a steady, if gradual, development pace, even releasing a public playable demo as recently as this May.

Widely regarded as a masterpiece of the medium, Ocarina of Time has set the benchmark for adventure games since its 1998 debut. While the 2011 Ocarina of Time 3D refresh for the Nintendo 3DS provided polished visuals and quality-of-life adjustments, fans have long clamored for a comprehensive, ground-up reimagining on home consoles. CryZENx’s project successfully captured the imagination of the community precisely because it fulfilled that long-standing wish.

With Nintendo’s official Switch 2 remake on the horizon, CryZENx feels the fan project has run its course. In a commentary regarding the announcement, the developer expressed genuine admiration for the upcoming title, stating, "I’m actually very confident that their remake looks 200% better than mine; I’m very impressed by their realistic art style—I think we, the community, won!"

While the developer jokingly referenced Nintendo's infamous legal vigilance, the end of this ten-year labor of love marks a celebratory transition rather than a simple loss, as it coincides with the arrival of the high-fidelity update fans have been waiting for.

As for the future, CryZENx is surveying the community to determine their next venture. A poll currently includes other beloved Zelda entries like Twilight Princess and The Minish Cap. Interestingly, the developer ruled out a Majora's Mask project, anticipating that it is the most likely candidate for an official Nintendo remake following Ocarina of Time.

Official release details for Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake remain forthcoming.
