Zack Snyder to Remake the ’80s Sci-Fi Classic That Inspired Metal Gear

Two decades after revitalizing George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead for modern audiences, Zack Snyder is setting his sights on another iconic piece of genre cinema. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder is officially tapped to write and helm a fresh take on John Carpenter’s seminal 1981 action masterpiece, Escape from New York, the film that introduced audiences to the legendary anti-hero Snake Plissken.

Unlike Snyder’s recent direct-to-streaming endeavors, such as Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire and its successor, The Scargiver, this ambitious revival is being developed as a major theatrical release. While the project is still in its nascent stages—with plans to pitch the concept to studios in the coming weeks—it carries significant pedigree, as John Carpenter himself is slated to serve as an executive producer.

Talks of an Escape from New York reboot have circulated for years, with various attempts dating back to 2015 failing to gain real momentum. However, with a high-profile filmmaker like Snyder now firmly attached, the project finally seems to have the backing required to move from development purgatory to production.

Set in a dystopian 1997, Carpenter’s original cult classic depicts a United States crippled by rampant crime, leading the government to transform the entire island of Manhattan into a sprawling, inescapable maximum-security prison. When Air Force One is downed by insurgents, President John Harker (Donald Pleasence) is trapped inside the hellscape, forcing the military to draft former special-ops soldier Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) to retrieve him. Plissken, motivated by the promise of a full pardon for his own criminal record, ventures into the ruinous city to face off against the formidable gang leader known as The Duke (Isaac Hayes).

Russell famously reprised the role for the 1996 sequel Escape from L.A., and the character’s legacy has echoed through pop culture for decades—most notably serving as the primary archetype for Hideo Kojima’s iconic Solid Snake in the Metal Gear franchise.

Reflecting on the film’s origins, Carpenter noted in a 1994 interview that he penned the script in the mid-70s following the Watergate scandal, a time when public trust in the presidency had hit an all-time low. “I wrote the screenplay, and no studio wanted to touch it,” he recalled. “They all said, ‘We’ve been hard enough on the President… we can’t handle this kind of dark view.'”

Whether Snyder can successfully capture that same cynical, gritty atmosphere for a new generation—and convince modern viewers that a high-stakes rescue mission for a compromised leader still resonates—remains to be seen. Given his signature visual style, the director certainly has a massive challenge ahead of him.
