The boundary-pushing septet XG, originally introduced to the world as the “Xtraordinary Girls,” is maturing into a new era—and their name is evolving right along with them.
As of Monday, Jan. 12, the group’s management announced that the “XG” acronym will now represent “Xtraordinary Genes.” This symbolic pivot marks a major milestone for the collective, as all seven members have officially entered their 20s, ushering in a more sophisticated phase of their artistic and personal journey.
According to an official statement, the shift to “Xtraordinary Genes” highlights the “intrinsic creativity, distinct individuality, and avant-garde energy” woven into the group’s DNA. Rather than a mere cosmetic rebrand, the change serves as a bold declaration of growth, emphasizing the source of their artistry as they continue to challenge cultural boundaries globally.
Consisting of Jurin, Chisa, Hinata, Juria, Cocona, Maya, and Harvey, XG first burst onto the scene in 2022 with their debut single “Tippy Toes.” In the years since, they have solidified their presence in the industry with the release of two acclaimed EPs: New DNA (2023) and Awe (2024).
Fans won’t have to wait long for the next chapter. The Japanese girl group is set to release their highly anticipated debut full-length album, The Core, on January 23. To celebrate the release, XG will embark on an extensive world tour beginning in February.
The “Xtraordinary Genes” era was first teased in September with the release of the lead single “Gala.” In a discussion regarding the track’s impact, executive producer JAKOPS (SIMON) told Billboard Japan that the ultimate ambition is to “produce the most exceptional record in the world.”
“The seven members are maturing at a staggering, almost formidable pace,” he remarked. “It truly feels as though we have completed one chapter and are opening an entirely new season.”
