Xbox to Close Five Studios Amid Over 3,000 Layoffs

Microsoft Gaming Xbox Series X/S CEO Asha Sharma Layoffs

In a move described as the most sweeping structural overhaul in the company’s history, Xbox is parting ways with five of its development studios while preparing to reduce its workforce by over 3,000 positions in the coming months. The studios affected—Compulsion Games, Double Fine Productions, Ninja Theory, Undead Labs, and Arkane Studios—face varying futures, ranging from gaining independence to finding new ownership.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma outlined this aggressive “reset” strategy in an extensive internal communication, citing systemic issues within the business. “Our current trajectory is unsustainable,” Sharma noted. “We are operating with margins significantly lower than our peers, and our core business has struggled to keep pace with industry demands. We need to simplify our operations to foster long-term stability.”

The Future of the Studios:

  • Compulsion Games and Double Fine: These studios will transition back to independent operations, retaining full ownership of their intellectual property and back catalogs.
  • Ninja Theory and Undead Labs: Both teams are currently negotiating with new owners. Crucially, funding is secured to ensure the completion of their upcoming titles, Senua and State of Decay 3, both of which are tracking for a 2027 release.
  • Arkane Studios: The future of the Lyon-based team remains uncertain. The studio is currently engaged in formal consultations regarding potential strategic options for its future, including the status of the highly anticipated Marvel’s Blade.

Operational Realignment

The restructuring extends beyond studio divestments. Approximately 3,200 employees will be laid off throughout the 2027 fiscal year, with 1,600 departures taking effect immediately. Despite these workforce reductions, Sharma confirmed that all previously announced game projects remain in development. To streamline communication, Xbox will drastically reduce its management hierarchy—aiming for a maximum of three to five layers—to eliminate the bureaucratic friction that has plagued recent decision-making.

Additionally, Helen Chiang has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer of Xbox, stepping in for the retiring Dave McCarthy. Under this new leadership, Mojang and King will now report directly to the CEO, centralizing oversight to improve efficiency.

Sharma closed her address with a focus on 2027, expressing a clear ambition to pivot the company back toward sustainable growth. “History is rarely kind to organizations that mistake their longevity for inevitability,” Sharma wrote. “We are committed to building a leaner, more focused Xbox that can successfully connect with a global audience.”
