Ahoy, mateys! If you’ve been scouring the horizon for more high-seas cinematic adventures in the wake of Pirates of the Caribbean, you’ll be thrilled to learn that Xbox is ready to hoist the sails.

As noted by Entertainment Weekly, Asha Sharma, the newly appointed CEO of Xbox, has a bold mandate: to transform the gaming giant into a powerhouse of global entertainment. In light of this strategic pivot, the confirmation that Rare’s quintessential pirate sandbox, Sea of Thieves, is being developed into a live-action feature film comes as a natural—and exciting—progression.

While an official director has yet to be attached to the project, EW confirmed that Destin Daniel Cretton, the visionary behind Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, will helm the production through his boutique studio, Hisako.

This project joins a growing fleet of adaptations in the works, including a Netflix-based animated Minecraft series, a cinematic take on Gears of War, an Amazon-produced Wolfenstein series, and even a reality show inspired by Fallout Shelter.

Given the immense critical and commercial success of adaptations like the Fallout television series and the recent Minecraft film, expectations are high for Sea of Thieves. The title presents a unique creative challenge: as a player-driven, open-world sandbox, it lacks a traditional linear narrative, relying instead on the emergent stories players craft during their voyages. It is a hurdle that Matt Booty, executive vice president and chief content officer at Xbox, is clearly prepared to navigate.

“The protagonist of a Sea of Thieves experience is the player and their community,” Booty explained to EW. “It isn’t about defined heroes or a rigid script; it’s about the social fabric, the cooperative spirit, and the distinct atmosphere of the game. That’s what we aim to translate.”

Much like the Minecraft film, which prioritized community engagement over deep-seated lore and triumphed with a $163 million opening week, Xbox is clearly betting on IPs with strong social foundations. Whether these choices are driven by the inherent draw of these digital playgrounds or the creative freedom afforded by their open-ended nature, the strategy is yielding results.

With momentum on their side, Xbox is aggressively expanding its footprint in Hollywood. As Sharma noted, the ambition isn’t to mirror traditional linear networks, but to embrace the reality that gaming and modern culture are now synonymous. “Great games are culture, and culture is entertainment,” Sharma stated. With massive hits like Fallout and the cultural dominance of franchises like Call of Duty, it is clear that Hollywood is more eager than ever to partner with the gaming giant.
