Xbox Fixes Critical Game Launch Bug Affecting Disc Users

Microsoft has prepared a mandatory patch that will become available starting August 17.

A recent Microsoft infrastructure outage caused an issue that prevented some Xbox owners from launching games. The error even affected certain physical disc copies.

Xbox Chief Technology Officer Scott Van Winkle explained that the problem appeared after a system update. The service responsible for delivering content to home consoles and verifying Xbox Game Pass purchases stopped working. An additional software error in the Xbox software caused failures in other license-checking mechanisms.

Microsoft took direct control of the problematic service and prepared a fix. Starting August 17, the update will become mandatory for console users.

Our engineering and operations teams are thoroughly analyzing the entire system to increase the reliability of our products and services.

The company also promises to release new system patches and features in the coming weeks and months.
