Wisp Delivers a Dreamy Reimagining of Green Day’s ‘Last Night on Earth’ for Like A Version
Emerging shoegaze sensation Wisp recently made her highly anticipated debut on Australia’s celebrated triple j segment, Like A Version. For her performance, the American artist delivered a hauntingly ethereal rendition of Green Day’s 2009 piano ballad, “Last Night on Earth.”
The singer—who has garnered a massive following for her reverb-drenched, atmospheric sonics—noted that her choice of cover was driven by a genuine, long-standing affection for the track. “I chose this cover for a very simple reason: I just think it’s a lovely song,” Wisp shared during the studio session. “It’s straightforward, it’s fun, and it’s been a staple on my personal playlists for a long time, so I already knew every word by heart.”
Originally featured on Green Day’s ambitious rock opera 21st Century Breakdown, the song has long been a fan favorite for its raw, sentimental tone. Wisp leaned heavily into that emotional vulnerability, trade-marking the track with shimmering guitar textures and expansive ambient effects. By stripping away the original’s polished rock production, she transformed the punk trio’s heartfelt melody into something far more hazy and immersive.
Beyond the performance itself, Wisp revealed that the track has been a significant touchstone for her creative process. “I’ve been curating a collection of songs to draw inspiration from for the next album I’m currently writing,” she explained. “The Green Day song was a central part of that moodboard.”
In addition to the reinvented cover, Wisp showcased her own artistry with a live performance of her original breakout track, “Black Swan.”
For decades, Like A Version has served as a premier platform for artists to provide bold, transformative interpretations of classic hits. Wisp’s contribution fits perfectly into this legacy, replacing the crisp piano of the original with a wall of sound and a dreamlike aesthetic. Fans can now stream the full session via triple j’s official digital channels.
