To ignite anticipation for the upcoming TikTok trailer debut, Legendary Entertainment recently unveiled a striking collection of character portraits for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 3. The newly released imagery offers a glimpse at a weathered Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya), both appearing battle-hardened by the sands of Arrakis. We also see the maturation of Alia—the daughter of Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson)—now portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy. However, the most startling revelation is the return of Jason Momoa. Though his character, Duncan Idaho, met a valiant end in the first film, Momoa returns as a mysterious figure known as Hayt.

The explanation for this resurrection lies in Dune Messiah, the 1969 sequel providing the narrative foundation for the third film. Set twelve years after the events of Dune, the story follows Paul’s struggle to manage a sprawling empire built upon the violent religious fervor of the Fremen. In a bid to destabilize his rule, a shadowy conspiracy presents Paul with a “gift”: a ghola. This biological clone, grown from the remains of the original Duncan Idaho, is an affront to Fremen tradition and a psychological weapon designed to fracture Paul’s resolve.

While Villeneuve has stated his intent to conclude his journey with a trilogy, the literary Duncan Idaho is the true anchor of the franchise. He is the only character to appear in all six of Frank Herbert’s original novels, being repeatedly cloned and martyred over thousands of years. Throughout the saga, he serves as a witness to the evolution of the Atreides bloodline, eventually becoming a pivotal figure in the schemes of the Bene Gesserit. While Paul remains the face of the current films, Momoa is portraying the character who truly endures as the saga’s ultimate survivor.

Dune 3 is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18.
