After being first announced late last year, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis took center stage at last week’s PlayStation State of Play. The showcase confirmed a February 12, 2027, launch date and clarified the project’s stance on generative AI—a point of concern following a disclosure on the game’s Steam page. While Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog initially utilized AI in their development workflow, they maintain that every piece of AI-generated content has since been meticulously refined or replaced by human hands.

During the Summer Game Fest 2026 media sessions, we had the opportunity to go hands-on with the title and sit down with the development team. When questioned about the specific integration of generative AI, Jeff Adams, the game’s experience director, framed the technology as an efficiency booster rather than a creative replacement.

“At Crystal Dynamics, we view AI as a utility to help our team reach the right solutions more efficiently,” Adams explained. “For instance, during early-stage level prototyping, if we have a concept for an environmental asset but aren’t ready to commit full development resources to it, we might use AI to visualize how that object functions in the space. If it proves effective, the idea transitions into our traditional production pipeline. Our team then crafts, models, and polishes the asset to ensure that every final element in the game is human-made. Delivering the highest quality experience for our fans is our absolute priority.”

When asked for further technical clarity regarding how these AI-generated pieces interact with the game engine’s scripting or environmental systems, a PR representative intervened, noting that the studio prefers to let the quality of the final product speak for itself once it is ready for public release.

Adams added, “Our goal is simply to streamline the process of delivering top-tier gaming experiences. That is what matters most.”

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled to arrive on February 12, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
