D&D Brings Back Iconic Storytellers for New Adventures
Throughout its illustrious 50-year history, Dungeons & Dragons has seen countless creators shape its trajectory. Certain visionary architects have become so synonymous with the tabletop RPG and its sprawling mythology that enthusiasts constantly yearn for their return, regardless of how much time has elapsed. Addressing this fervent community desire, a groundbreaking product initiative was officially unveiled during the D&D Vision Keynote 2027 at Gen Con.

Dubbed D&D Icons, this ambitious endeavor reunites some of the most influential masterminds in the franchise's history to craft entirely new narratives. The initial roster boasts legendary authors such as Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, R.A. Salvatore, and Luke Gygax. Meanwhile, acclaimed actor, writer, producer, and lifelong tabletop devotee Joe Manganiello will helm the initiative as its chief creative officer (while simultaneously steering his proprietary campaign setting, Death Saves).

For the first time in over two decades, Weis and Hickman are returning to pen a Dragonlance TTRPG supplement, heralded by official press materials as "the most ambitious Dragonlance volume ever." Concurrently, Salvatore will leverage the Icons framework to breathe new life into his legendary drow ranger, Drizzt Do'Urden, from the celebrated Legend of Drizzt saga. Rounding out the inaugural slate, Luke Gygax is spearheading a Greyhawk venture built upon previously unreleased notes and draft material left behind by his late father and D&D co-creator, Gary Gygax. Slated for a 2027 release, this project promises a poignant journey "through Gary Gygax's eyes."

While deeply rooted in powerful nostalgia, the initiative is decidedly forward-looking. According to keynote presentations, the primary objective is to pair these literary pioneers directly with current design teams to collaboratively steer future publications. Iconic campaign settings like Dragonlance, Greyhawk, and the Forgotten Realms will continue to evolve, honoring their historical roots by actively re-engaging the minds that originally brought them to life.

Dan Ayoub, head of the D&D franchise at Wizards of the Coast, signaled this shift shortly after stepping into his role a little over a year ago, identifying the reintegration of legendary creators as a core priority. He reiterated this commitment last autumn through social media previews alongside Manganiello, Weis, and Laura and Tracy Hickman. Notably, Weis and Hickman's participation marks a significant milestone given their historical friction with Wizards, which notably included a 2020 legal dispute. Similarly, Luke Gygax's involvement is a welcome reconciliation, particularly after cultural shifts and controversies somewhat overshadowed his father's foundational contributions in recent years.

Ayoub’s overarching philosophy for the brand—encapsulated by the mantra "A new dawn for D&D"—focuses squarely on propelling the franchise forward by respecting its bedrock history. Bringing back revered figures who command immense community goodwill is a powerful first step, but it is the explicit mandate of D&D Icons to actively shape tomorrow's adventures that makes this venture truly compelling.
