Tom Cruise Legal Thriller The Firm Arrives on Paramount Plus

Tom Cruise has built a career playing men who find themselves in dangerous situations, whether by choice or by sheer bad luck. From dangling off a skyscraper in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol to running for his life in War of the Worlds to navigating the bizarre events of Eyes Wide Shut, Cruise delivers when the stakes are high and people cannot be trusted. His latest project, Digger, proves there is rarely a dull moment when Cruise leads a cast.

However, some of his best work came long before he started hanging off airplanes and outrunning explosions, back when he established his reputation as one of Hollywood’s compelling leading men. Among the films in his early career, The Firm deserves a place near the top. Directed by Sydney Pollack and based on John Grisham’s bestselling 1991 novel, the legal thriller features Cruise as a young lawyer whose dream job turns into a nightmare. The film trades globe-trotting spectacle for mounting paranoia, and The Firm is worth watching now that it streams on Paramount Plus.

The story follows Mitch McDeere, played by Tom Cruise, as a brilliant Harvard Law School graduate who accepts an offer from a prestigious Memphis law firm offering a generous compensation package. The firm provides him with a house, a luxury car, and financial security that seems too good to pass up. His wife, Abby, played by Jeanne Tripplehorn, feels thrilled with their new life, and Mitch believes he made it.

The firm has secrets it wants kept buried. After learning that other attorneys died under mysterious circumstances, Mitch suspects his employers are involved in something far more sinister than questionable legal practices. He finds himself caught between the FBI, which wants his help bringing the firm down, and powerful people who make it clear that leaving is not an option.

The Firm reveals to Mitch the mistake he made over the first two acts. Mitch is ambitious, arrogant, and convinced that his education and intelligence will carry him through anything. Tom Cruise plays him with confidence to make his eventual panic believable, and the film benefits from watching that confidence disappear.

The Cost of Compromise

The Firm 1

Gene Hackman plays Avery Tolar, the veteran attorney assigned to mentor Mitch. Hackman’s friendly demeanor conceals a man who lives with uncomfortable compromises. During a business trip to the Cayman Islands, Avery sits with Mitch at an outdoor resort bar. Beneath the tropical sunlight, Avery drops his polished facade to offer a warning about the inescapable grip of the firm, capturing the disillusionment of a man who traded his soul for luxury.

The Firm became a major hit because Sydney Pollack understood that the scariest part of Mitch’s predicament is not the threat of violence, but the fact that the firm embedded itself into every corner of his life. His house, marriage, career, and financial future are tied to an organization that will not let him walk away. Based on John Grisham’s novel, the movie streamlines the legal machinations while keeping the central appeal of an ordinary professional discovering that the system works against him. The supporting cast features Ed Harris, Hal Holbrook, and Wilford Brimley.

The Firm 3

At two and a half hours, The Firm requires time, and the plotting gets tangled in details. Tom Cruise’s performance and Sydney Pollack’s direction keep the story moving. It captures a moment in Cruise’s career when he proved himself as a dramatic actor capable of carrying a Hollywood thriller without relying on physical spectacle.

If you want a Tom Cruise movie to watch this weekend that is not Digger, The Firm is worth your time.

The Firm is streaming on Paramount Plus. It is also on Peacock and HBO Max through the end of October.
