Johnny Flynn Discusses His Approach to Lucius Malfoy in Upcoming Harry Potter Series
The upcoming adaptation will provide a closer look at the private life of the Malfoy family.
Johnny Flynn found an explanation for Lucius Malfoy’s cruelty in his past. In an interview with Radio Times, the actor who plays Draco’s father shared that he views his character as someone who was bullied by peers as a child and eventually turned into a bully himself:
“He was one of those kids who was bullied at school, and now he’s turned into a bully himself and doesn’t know any other way to behave. That’s how I want to play him, because I know people like that well. On the one hand, they bullied me and caused pain, but at one point they were victims themselves. That’s why no one in the world is completely good or bad.”

The Malfoy family will receive more attention as early as the first season. Lox Pratt, who plays Draco, previously confirmed that viewers will see his character at home. These scenes were not in the book and will provide a closer look at the environment where Draco grew up and his relationship with his parents.
The first season adapts Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. It will premiere on HBO Max on December 25, 2026.
