The Whitlams are set to return to their roots this October with the announcement of the “Return to Rock Island” tour. This nine-show East Coast circuit promises a high-energy departure from the band’s recent, more formal “Orchestral ’26” residency, offering fans a grittier, classic pub-rock experience.
The tour kicks off on October 2 at Hotel Brunswick in Brunswick Heads. The schedule includes stops in Coffs Harbour, two-night stints at iconic venues like Melbourne’s Corner Hotel, Sydney’s Metro Theatre, and Brisbane’s The Triffid, with a final performance at Wombarra Bowlo on October 18. Support for all dates will be provided by William Crighton and his band. Early access tickets go on sale Tuesday, June 23, at 10 a.m. local time via thewhitlams.com.
Following the successful conclusion of their orchestral tour—which played to packed houses at major landmarks like Sydney’s State Theatre and Melbourne’s Hamer Hall—the band is eager to get back into the intimate atmosphere of local pubs. Reflecting on the shift in tone, the band shared, “We’re hitting our favourite watering holes this October for something completely different. We’re excited to bring back the raucous energy—come join us at the Metro, the Triffid, and the Corner.”
Since their inception in Newtown, Sydney, in 1992, The Whitlams have carved out a significant legacy in Australian music. After building a cult following in the inner-city scene, they achieved widespread fame with their 1997 triple-platinum masterpiece, Eternal Nightcap. The record earned them the 1998 ARIA Song of the Year for “No Aphrodisiac” and dominated the Triple J Hottest 100 that same year. Their momentum continued with Love This City (1999) and the chart-topping Torch the Moon (2002), cementing their status as national icons.
