The Real Budget For Hideo Kojima’s Physint Remains A Mystery

Comment Views: 6

Following a recent report alleging that Hideo Kojima’s upcoming spiritual successor, Physint, carried a staggering $400 million price tag, widespread speculation erupted regarding the project’s true financial backing. While the exact budget remains under wraps, industry insiders including Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier and representatives from Windows Central have stepped forward to clarify that the actual figures are considerably more grounded.

The discourse surrounding Physint’s financial scope

During an appearance on The Game Business Show on September 24, journalist Christopher Dring casually estimated the game’s investment threshold to be in the neighborhood of $400 million. Given that Xbox recently secured a publishing agreement for Physint amidst a tumultuous period of corporate restructuring and massive studio layoffs, the community reaction was predictably polarized.

However, prominent journalists were quick to refute these exaggerated claims. Writing on ResetEra, Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier acknowledged his usual reluctance to discuss figures without verified documentation, noting that a reliable source with direct knowledge of the negotiations confirmed Xbox acquired Physint for “significantly less.” This sentiment was reinforced by Windows Central, whose internal contacts similarly characterized the true cost as a mere fraction of the rumored $400 million valuation.

Dring has since clarified his remarks on X, directing attention to a prior editorial where he mentioned hearing fluctuating estimates ranging from $300 million to $600 million during the Tokyo Game Show. He conceded, “whether Xbox paid that, I don’t know.” Ultimately, the $400 million figure appears to have been little more than speculative industry corridor talk rather than a verified financial metric.

Because major publishers rarely disclose precise development expenditures, game budgets remain shrouded in ambiguity. Kojima Productions has repeatedly urged enthusiasts to exercise caution regarding unverified reports from unofficial channels. Consequently, the actual financial framework behind Physint may never be officially publicized, especially this far ahead of its scheduled release.

The intense scrutiny surrounding Physint underscores broader anxieties regarding the skyrocketing costs of modern AAA game development, particularly as Xbox redirects monumental resources toward high-profile creators while simultaneously dismantling internal studios. Whatever financial commitment Xbox ultimately made to secure Physint and OD represents capital deliberately diverted away from foundational internal teams like Double Fine, Compulsion Games, Undead Labs, Ninja Theory, and Arkane Studios.
