The Next Big Warhammer Game Delayed, Now Facing 2026’s Biggest Release

While the vast majority of game publishers actively flee from the shadow of Grand Theft Auto 6 and its November 19 launch window, the stalwart Space Marines apparently fear no rival. Deep Silver and King Art Games have officially postponed Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4, pushing its release from September 17 to December 3—just a fortnight after Rockstar’s behemoth arrives.

Shifting Dawn of War 4 closer to the GTA 6 release window might actually prove to be a masterstroke. This strategic pivot rescues the real-time strategy title from an extraordinarily congested September lineup, which currently boasts heavyweights like Control Resonant, Marvel’s Wolverine, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Blood of the Dawnwalker, and Silent Hill: Townfall, among others.

Addressing the rationale behind the delay, game director Jan Theysen clarified in a video update that King Art Games requires “the extra weeks to integrate player feedback more deeply, eradicate bugs, optimize performance, and refine the overall polish.” Theysen noted that community reception during playtests has been overwhelmingly encouraging, prompting the studio to invest a little more time to meet high expectations.

Furthermore, the developers outlined revisions to the post-launch roadmap for Dawn of War 4. Major features, such as the Crusade Mode, Mission Editor, and dedicated map packs, have been deferred to 2027. Meanwhile, the Blood Ravens Story Prologue DLC is scheduled for a spring rollout, followed by the Aftermath campaign expansion in the summer. At launch, players can command four distinct factions: the Space Marines, Adeptus Mechanicus, Necrons, and Orks.

This upcoming installment marks a milestone as the first Dawn of War title developed entirely without the involvement of Relic Entertainment. Relic launched the original Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War in 2004, later delivering sequels in 2009 and 2017. While the first two entries earned critical acclaim for their tactical depth and faithful adaptation of the lore, Dawn of War 3 proved deeply polarizing. To this day, it struggles with a modest 47% approval rating on Steam, with players frequently criticizing lingering technical issues nearly a decade later.

King Art Games secured this opportunity after winning over Deep Silver with their previous strategy venture, Iron Harvest. Meanwhile, the wider Warhammer multimedia ecosystem continues to expand rapidly, with numerous projects in development—including an upcoming animated television series courtesy of Amazon and Saber Interactive’s anticipated Warhammer: Space Marine 3.

And SGF 2026 has only just begun
