Tuesday’s State of Play event kicked off with a burst of energy as Ikumi Nakamura unveiled the debut gameplay trailer for the highly anticipated PlayStation 5 title, Kemuri. In this stylish action game, you step into the role of a specialized yokai hunter, navigating urban environments to track down supernatural entities—a journey you can share with friends if you have an active PlayStation Plus subscription.

Since its initial reveal in 2023, the team at Unseen has defined Kemuri as a unique synthesis of traditional Japanese folklore, vibrant anime-inspired visuals, and contemporary street culture. Fashion serves as a central pillar of the gameplay; as you finalize contracts with demons, you can effectively “equip” them, allowing you to inhabit their forms and harness their paranormal abilities. While some of these spirits are drawn from authentic legends, others have been meticulously crafted specifically for the game’s expanded universe.

“This world challenges yokai hunters to confront deep existential themes and difficult moral choices as they track and neutralize their prey in fast-paced combat,” the official press kit notes. “By collecting a vast array of yokai—ranging from the malevolent to the benign—you can constantly shift your appearance and master a diverse suite of supernatural skills.”

You can watch the latest gameplay reveal below.

While official PlayStation sources confirm there are multiple combat styles, the trailer highlights a few core archetypes: players can opt to engage in visceral, close-quarters combat or maintain distance using an arsenal of arcane abilities.

Beyond its striking visual identity, Kemuri looks remarkably fluid. The gameplay features the kind of gravity-defying, high-speed city traversal seen in titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man or Gravity Rush, yet it carries the playful, high-energy sensibilities of a competitive arena game aimed at a modern, trend-conscious audience.

Fans of the medium may remember Ikumi Nakamura for her viral, infectious enthusiasm during the 2019 E3 circuit, which cemented her status as a fan-favorite industry icon. Those familiar with her storied career—which includes legendary projects like Okami, Bayonetta, and Resident Evil 2—won’t be surprised to see her spearheading a project with such distinct artistic vision. In true fashion-forward form, Unseen has already launched a curated selection of merchandise inspired by the game.

Kemuri is slated for a 2027 release on PlayStation 5.
