The latest Pokémon game is now available on mobile devices

The latest entry in the franchise has officially made its way to mobile devices. As of this Wednesday, Pokémon Champions is available for download on both Android and iOS platforms. Consistent with other mobile titles in the series, such as Pokémon GO and Pokémon TCG Pocket, the game is free to play but features integrated microtransactions.

Functioning as a combat-centric spin-off, the title evokes the classic Pokémon Stadium experience. Unlike the recent mainline release, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, which experimented with real-time combat mechanics, Pokémon Champions opts for a more traditional approach by sticking to the series' roots with turn-based strategy.

Rather than venturing into the wild to capture creatures, players "recruit" members for their roster using an in-game currency known as Victory Points. For those looking to utilize their existing collection, the game also supports importing partners via Pokémon Home. While the franchise boasts a roster of over 1,000 unique species, the mobile version launches with a curated selection of nearly 200.

Since its April debut on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, Pokémon Champions has met with a polarized response from the community, with players torn between appreciating the bold mechanical shifts and lamenting the loss of certain series staples. At Polygon, we characterized the title as having an identity crisis: "Depending on who you are, Champions is either a slap in the face to long-time players, a much-needed introduction to newcomers, or business as usual for the series’ competitive scene."

To celebrate the mobile launch, both mobile and console users can claim a complimentary Raichu—complete with Mega Stones—via the in-game mail system through September 2. Furthermore, a fresh battle pass and a new ranked competitive season are now live as of this Wednesday.
