The Last of Us franchise expansion beyond Part I and Part II by Naughty Dog

Ever since Naughty Dog first introduced players to The Last of Us on the PlayStation 3 back in 2013, the franchise has grown exponentially. Over the years, the storied survival-horror universe has expanded through the emotional narrative DLC Left Behind, a PS4 remaster, The Last of Us Part II, a stunning PlayStation 5 remake of the original masterpiece, and a subsequent remaster of its sequel. Despite this extensive catalog, the journey is far from over. Studio co-creator and head Neil Druckmann has officially confirmed that the development team is actively shaping two distinct new projects designed to push the franchise’s overarching narrative far beyond the events of Parts I and II.

This exciting revelation emerged during Naughty Dog’s traditional Outbreak Day festivities, celebrated annually on September 28—the exact date the devastating Cordyceps brain infection overran civilization in the game’s lore. While the yearly event primarily serves as a tribute for the community, the studio frequently utilizes the occasion to offer tantalizing glimpses into its future endeavors.

“Ever since the release of Grounded II, we have seriously explored the avenues available for telling fresh stories within the universe of The Last of Us,” Druckmann shared in an official Naughty Dog blog post. “We currently have a couple of compelling new projects in their infancy, meaning we cannot divulge specific details just yet. However, I can confirm that both endeavors will meaningfully extend the canon of The Last of Us past Part I and Part II. This world holds immense significance for our team, and we would only ever revisit it if we felt we had something profound to express. We genuinely believe these upcoming narratives deserve to be brought to life.”

It remains worth noting that Druckmann deliberately avoided using the word “games,” opting instead for the broader term “projects.” While fans naturally hope these initiatives will take the form of AAA interactive experiences—the medium where Naughty Dog excels—the phrasing leaves the door wide open for potential television adaptations, cinematic features, graphic novels, literature, or entirely different mediums.

Given that Naughty Dog has yet to officially launch Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, its ambitious sci-fi action title first showcased at The Game Awards, eager fans will likely have to wait quite a while before getting a proper look at these newly teased additions to The Last of Us universe.
