Bungie Outlines Marathon Development Plan Through March 2027
New shells, new enemies, new locations, new gear, and much more.
Bungie has unveiled an updated roadmap for Marathon, detailing key changes coming to the game from October 2026 through March 2027. The developers intend to gradually expand the project beyond its traditional PvPvE model and give players more ways to interact with the world.
The first phase is the October Nightfall Refresh update. It aims to overhaul the progression system, rewards, and overall gameplay. Bungie will also reset player progress and the in-game economy, add a new Reward Pass, and introduce several balance adjustments. The update was released on October 6.
The next major milestone is the Symbiosis update, scheduled for December 8. The primary addition will be Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience. Bungie wants to give players the opportunity to explore the world, progress, and fight opponents without being forced into constant confrontations with other players.

Symbiosis will also expand the Perimeter location, introduce a new Runner shell, improve the onboarding system for newcomers, and provide players with a social space featuring a firing range. In addition, the developers are preparing an experimental PvP mode.
In March 2027, Bungie plans to combine Marathon’s new elements into a unified system that includes permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP survival challenges.
The March update will also bring an expanded onboarding system, deeper shell progression and customization, new enemies, and an entirely new play zone.
