The Five Most Dangerous Devils in Chainsaw Man
Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man leans heavily into grotesque body horror. The narrative begins with Denji, an impoverished teenager who forms a pact with Pochita, the canine Chainsaw Devil. After zombies murder Denji, Pochita replaces his heart, transforming him into a human-devil hybrid. Denji then joins the Public Safety Devil Hunters to secure a stable life. In this brutal setting, Denji’s chainsaw heart becomes a coveted prize for various monsters operating in the shadows.
The Chainsaw Man manga introduces terrifying Devils that embody human vulnerabilities, loss of bodily autonomy, and primal concepts like darkness or eternity. These creatures gain power in direct proportion to how much humanity fears the ideas they represent, a dynamic brought to life vividly in the anime adaptation.
Warning: Spoilers for Chainsaw Man follow.
Some Devils work alongside humans. The Blood Devil, Power, grows into Denji’s closest friend over time. Other adversaries, such as the Bomb Devil Reze, maintain complicated personal ties to Denji while attempting to assassinate him. Each creature pursues distinct goals, ranging from spontaneous violence to intricate, long-term conspiracies.
Below are five of the most terrifying Devils in the Chainsaw Man manga, ranked.
5. Control Devil (Makima)

Makima presents herself as a supportive figure to Denji, yet her behavior quickly reveals calculated manipulation. She exploits Denji’s craving for human connection, building a dynamic that keeps him obedient and desperate. As the Control Devil, Makima brainwashes living beings to do her bidding. Her contract with the Japanese government diverts any physical harm dealt to her onto random citizens, underscoring her complete disregard for individual lives.
Makima stands out because of her detached, bureaucratic cruelty. Her ultimate goal is to consume the Chainsaw Devil to eliminate war, death, and hunger from the world. Because Makima cannot form equal relationships with others, she pursues this utopian aim by stripping away free will and forcing humanity into submission.
4. Falling Devil (Primal Fear)

The Falling Devil personifies an instinctual dread of physical drops and psychological collapse. Serving as a primary antagonist in the Academy Saga, where Asa Mitaka hosts the War Devil Yoru, the entity arrives on Earth and immediately compels people to jump to their deaths. The Falling Devil also weaponizes painful memories, hurling victims toward the gates of Hell.
Battling the Falling Devil is an overwhelming task due to her near-total immortality and rapid regeneration. She assaults the minds of targets with guilt, bends gravity to trigger natural disasters, and obliterated the Justice Devil with a single energy blast before Denji and Yoru managed to subdue her.
3. Gun Devil

Embodying humanity’s terror of firearms, the Gun Devil causes immense destruction without ever speaking or expressing comprehensible motives. In one catastrophic assault, the monster wiped out 1.2 million people across the globe in just five minutes.
The Gun Devil manifests in disturbing mechanical shapes. When possessing Aki Hayakawa, an M1911 slide and barrel projected from his face. When the President of the United States summoned a twenty percent portion of the entity, it wielded arms composed of M4 Carbines and other firearms. The global panic surrounding the Gun Devil never truly subsided, as world superpowers routinely hunted down fragments of its flesh for military leverage.
2. Darkness Devil (Primal Fear)

While the fear of death underpins many human anxieties, the fear of the unknown presents a distinct horror. The Darkness Devil embodies this primal dread through a cosmic, Cthulhu-esque presence that defies human comprehension.
The Darkness Devil can mutilate foes or kill with a single word. Even Makima struggled against the creature, suffering severe bleeding after being struck by its Blade of Darkness. Instantaneous regeneration allows the Darkness Devil to shrug off heavy damage, making direct combat against it almost entirely futile.

1. Chainsaw Devil (Pochita)
Pochita poses an existential threat to every Devil in existence. The overarching plot revolves around factions trying to harness or destroy the Chainsaw Devil, placing Denji in constant peril. Pochita possesses the power to erase concepts from human memory and reality itself by eating the corresponding Devil.
Pochita previously consumed the Nuclear Weapons Devil to wipe nuclear arms from history, though weapons can still be reconstructed if humanity possesses the necessary materials. In the manga’s ending, Pochita erases the concept of Chainsaw Man to release Denji from continuous tragedy, trading mythic authority for ordinary personal connection.
