The Definitive and Chaotic History of Darth Maul’s Sith Apprentices

In the vast lore of Star Wars, the bond between a master and an apprentice is a foundational archetype, transcending the binary of Jedi and Sith. While Sheev Palpatine is often cited as the ultimate manipulator of pupils, Darth Maul boasts a similarly tumultuous history of mentorship. Despite being discarded by the Sith Order, Maul remained tethered to its ideological roots, specifically the Rule of Two.

Maul’s journey is one of resilience and obsession. After his defeat by Obi-Wan Kenobi in The Phantom Menace, he spent years in a state of fractured sanity before being restored by Dathomirian magic. Upon his return, his primary objective was the construction of a personal empire capable of toppling his former master. Recognizing that such a feat required a subordinate, Maul spent his remaining years seeking a worthy successor to his dark legacy.

With the upcoming Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord introducing a new potential student in Devon Izara, it is the perfect moment to reflect on Maul’s previous attempts at mentorship and the tragic fates that befell those in his orbit.

Savage Opress: The Brother-Apprentice (20 BBY – 19 BBY)

Maul’s first serious foray into teaching began with his own flesh and blood, Savage Opress. A formidable Dathomirian Zabrak, Savage was transformed into a brute-force warrior through Nightsister sorcery. Originally a pawn for Asajj Ventress, Savage eventually located a deranged Maul on the wasteland of Lotho Minor and restored him to his former glory.

Under Maul’s tutelage, the pair sought to claim the title of True Sith Lords, dismissing Sidious and Dooku as illegitimate. However, Maul’s style of instruction was as brutal as his upbringing; he treated Savage with a cold severity that mirrored the abuse he once suffered under Palpatine. This partnership was ultimately cut short when Darth Sidious, viewing the brothers as a legitimate threat to his power, intervened on Mandalore. In a decisive duel, Sidious executed Savage, leaving Maul broken and alone once more.

Qi’ra: The Criminal Prodigy (10 BBY – 2 BBY)

Following the collapse of his Dathomirian alliance, Maul transitioned into the shadows of the galactic underworld, leading the Shadow Collective. While Dryden Vos served as the public face of Crimson Dawn, it was his lieutenant, Qi’ra, who truly earned Maul’s attention. Unlike his purely transactional relationship with Vos, Maul mentored Qi’ra in the ancient ways of the Sith.

Maul provided Qi’ra with more than just criminal leverage; he shared forbidden knowledge regarding his artifacts and the true identity of the Emperor. He also personally trained her in Teräs Käsi, a martial art designed to counter Force-wielders. Though Maul eventually met his end in the deserts of Tatooine, his influence persisted through Qi’ra, who utilized his teachings to launch her own clandestine war against the Sith in the years following his death.

Ezra Bridger: The Failed Conversion (3 BBY – 2 BBY)

Maul’s most desperate attempt at recruitment occurred during his encounter with Ezra Bridger on the Sith world of Malachor. Detecting Ezra’s latent frustrations with the Jedi way, Maul positioned himself as a sympathetic figure—an “Old Master” who understood the pain of loss. He successfully manipulated Ezra into helping him activate an ancient Sith superweapon hidden within the planet’s temple.

The facade of mentorship crumbled when Maul revealed his true colors, blinding Ezra’s actual master, Kanan Jarrus, and attempting to murder Ahsoka Tano. Despite this visceral betrayal, a spiritual residual remained; the two shared a Force bond that allowed them to glimpse each other’s thoughts and locations. This connection persisted until Maul’s final duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi, an event Ezra felt profoundly through the Force.

As the Shadow Lord narrative unfolds, the question remains: will Maul finally succeed in molding Devon Izara, or is his legacy destined to be one of failed successions? Fans can find out when the series arrives on Disney Plus this April.
