Dave Bautista Reportedly in Talks to Replace Injured Ryan Hurst as Kratos in God of War Series

Production on Amazon Prime’s highly anticipated live-action adaptation of God of War hit a major roadblock last month when original Kratos actor Ryan Hurst suffered a severe bicep tear during filming. Due to the extensive surgery and subsequent months of physical rehabilitation required for his recovery, Amazon has made the decision to recast the iconic lead role. According to Variety, Hollywood powerhouse Dave Bautista is currently front-runner status to wield the Leviathan Axe.

Sources close to the production indicate that Bautista is actively negotiating with the studio to bring the Ghost of Sparta to life. Best known globally for his memorable portrayal of Drax the Destroyer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Bautista has steadily built an impressive and diverse cinematic resume. His notable credits include stellar performances in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films, Blade Runner 2049, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Knock at the Cabin, and Army of the Dead, alongside upcoming appearances in Road House 2 and the reboot of Highlander.

Furthermore, Bautista is no stranger to the gaming community. He famously stepped into the boots of Marcus Fenix in Gears 5 following a passionate, long-running public campaign where he expressed his desire to play the iconic soldier on the big screen.

Earlier reports from Deadline revealed that approximately four episodes had already been safely captured on camera prior to Hurst’s unfortunate on-set injury. At this time, it remains uncertain whether that previously recorded footage will be completely reshot with the newly cast lead.

Fortunately, the rest of the stellar ensemble cast remains firmly intact. The series stars Callum Vinson as Atreus, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan reprising his legendary voice role as Mimir, Danny Woodburn as Brok, and Jeff Gulka as Sindri. Having already secured an impressive two-season greenlight, the ambitious television adaptation will closely follow the narrative framework of Santa Monica Studio’s critically acclaimed 2018 masterpiece.
