When Teyana Taylor was only 15 years old, she landed the career-defining opportunity to choreograph Beyoncé’s 2006 “Ring the Alarm” music video. That early collaboration sparked a long-standing mentorship, and the One Battle After Another star credits the pop icon with providing the guidance that shaped her professional journey.

In a recent conversation with People, Taylor shared the specific wisdom Beyoncé offered that helped her navigate the complexities of fame. “I entered this industry wearing my heart on my sleeve,” the Golden Globe winner admitted. She explained that she often struggled to grasp certain professional dynamics until Beyoncé told her simply, “Don’t take it personally.”

Taylor elaborated on the challenges of maintaining a specific creative vision, noting that the path can often feel solitary. She realized that to see her ideas executed perfectly, she frequently had to take matters into her own hands—a sentiment Beyoncé encouraged by stressing the importance of self-investment.

According to Taylor, the Destiny’s Child alumna taught her that true belief in oneself requires financial commitment. Beyoncé warned her that a significant portion of her earnings would likely go toward paying the collaborators needed to bring her visions to life. “Every single check isn’t going to end up in your pocket,” Taylor noted, adding that Beyoncé’s “gracious and humble” spirit set the ultimate example for how to stay grounded despite massive success.

These reflections arrive just as Taylor prepares for the 2026 Grammy Awards on February 1, where her project Escape Room is a contender for Best R&B Album. Her mentor, meanwhile, continues to dominate the landscape; just last year, Beyoncé extended her record-breaking Grammy count to 35 following the success of Cowboy Carter.

The mutual admiration between the two stars was on full display in 2024 when Taylor joined Victoria Monét for a high-energy BET Awards tribute to Beyoncé. The performance recreated a legendary 2004 live set, earning an enthusiastic seal of approval from Queen Bey herself on social media, which left Taylor—in her own words—absolutely “gagging.”
