Major Chinese corporations are continuing to scale back their presence and divest from Western holdings.
Recent reports reveal that the tech giant Tencent has moved to shutter another of its Western-based development houses. Staff members at TiMi Montréal recently confirmed the studio’s closure through posts on social media.
Launched in 2021, TiMi Montréal was originally introduced as a high-profile developer dedicated to crafting ambitious, multi-platform AAA open-world titles.
A few years back, the Tencent-owned TiMi Studio Group recruited Ashraf Ismail, the former creative director for the Assassin’s Creed franchise, following his departure from Ubisoft due to allegations of personal misconduct.
During its short operational lifespan, TiMi Montréal failed to officially announce a single project. Furthermore, there is no evidence suggesting the studio provided support or co-development services for other teams within the group.
This trend is not limited to Tencent; NetEase, another heavyweight in the Chinese gaming industry, is also aggressively offloading its Western assets.
