As previously mentioned, we are integrating cutting-edge technical upgrades into Black Mesa. This development effort is a collaborative endeavor shared by both our team and the talented developers behind the Black Mesa: Blue Shift mod, the HECU Collective.
We have been diligently testing these new features while performing preliminary work on the initial five chapters. Our strategy is to roll out these enhancements incrementally via our public-beta branch. Once we are satisfied with the stability, we will push the update to the main branch for everyone to experience.
Important Notice: Please be aware that existing save files will become incompatible once this update goes live on the mainline branch.
Rest assured, you will still be able to jump straight back into the action by restarting from your current chapter or by using console commands to jump to a specific map.
To summarize, this upcoming update focuses on the following key refinements:
- Resolving minor bugs and visual inconsistencies while optimizing various game assets.
- Implementing enhanced parallax-corrected cubemap reflections for superior surface depth.
- Refining outdoor baked lighting and integrating advanced image-based sky lighting.
- Upgrading indoor lighting systems, resulting in more natural static prop shading and improved ambient bounce light.
- Polishing real-time Cascaded Shadow Map (CSM) rendering.
- Delivering a significant boost to overall engine performance.
Check out these early glimpses of the improvements:

These adjustments are subtle by design, yet they impart a newfound sense of depth to the environment. During our testing, the game felt noticeably “flat” whenever we toggled these new lighting and reflection features off. We cannot wait for you to experience these refinements firsthand.
